Mobility & Medical
Aluminium is the material of choice across the mobility and medical equipment sectors, valued for its combination of low weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, and the ease with which it can be finished to a consistent, hygienic standard.
Astro Quip offers a proprietary range of locally designed and manufactured aluminium based assistive mobility devices that meet the relevant SABS and ISO standards applying to mobility aids, as well as a range of quality orthotic support products.
Our Turnkey Approach
Astro Quip maintains stock of its full range of aluminium assistive mobility devices and orthotic supports, available to orthotists and other customers in the industry.
The Astro Quip range is designed, manufactured and tested in South Africa at our own facility, giving us direct control over consistency and quality across every product.
All Astro Quip mobility devices are finished to a consistent, durable standard suited to daily use in medical and care environments. Our in-house anodising capability provides a hard, corrosion-resistant surface that is easy to clean.
Where powder-coated finishes are specified for mobility device components or related medical equipment, we provide powder coating services for aluminium and steel in a wide range of standard colours, suited to both functional and aesthetic requirements.

Why Aluminium in Mobility and Medical?
Strength-to-weight ratio
Patients and users of mobility aids carry or operate these devices daily. Aluminium offers the structural strength required for safe, reliable use at a fraction of the weight of steel, reducing fatigue and improving usability for people who depend on these products.
Corrosion resistance
Medical and mobility equipment is frequently exposed to moisture, cleaning agents, and body contact. Aluminium’s natural oxide layer provides inherent corrosion resistance, significantly enhanced by anodising or powder coating.
Hygienic surface finish
Anodised aluminium produces a hard, non-porous surface that is easy to clean and resistant to bacterial adhesion, making it well suited to medical and care environments where hygiene standards are stringent.
Consistent manufacturability
Aluminium extrusions can be produced to precise, repeatable dimensions, which is critical for medical devices and mobility aids where dimensional consistency directly affects product safety and performance.
Why Astro Quip for Mobility Aids?
The mobility and medical sector has demands that go beyond standard industrial supply. Products must meet defined safety and performance standards, dimensional consistency must be maintained across production runs, and the consequences of a quality failure are measured in patient safety rather than project delays.
Our national footprint, with offices and warehouses in Gauteng, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape, means we can service customers across South Africa.
The Astro Quip range is manufactured to meet or exceed the requirements of SABS specification CKS 112:1972 and ISO 11334-1. Astro Quip is also registered with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), confirming that our products meet the regulatory requirements applying to medical devices in South Africa.
To ensure ongoing compliance, we have invested in a dedicated in-house testing facility housing the apparatus needed to verify that every product in the range meets the relevant standards before it leaves our facility.
Specifications and Testing
A destructive test that determines the downward force a crutch will withstand without failing. The SABS specification requires the product to withstand a downward force of 125kg.
Determines that the soft grip covering the handle will withstand a specified amount of force without detaching from the plastic base material.
Determines the force required to allow the forearm to move through the cuff, ensuring the cuff release meets the required standard.
We test the Shore Hardness of all plastics used in the Astro Quip range, including ferrules, feet, and soft grips, in accordance with SABS and ISO standards.
We perform our own off-line quality testing across the full Astro Quip range, using the following test benches: Weight Bearing, Cuff Release, Soft Grip Release, and Ferrule and Foot Slippage.
